Dr Jill Adam is Executive Director of Jill Adam Associates. Jill led Initial Teacher Training at Leeds Metropolitan University, was Head of the School of Education and Professional Development and Associate Dean of the Carnegie Faculty of Sport and Education. She started her career as a secondary school teacher (11–18), initially specialising in Physical Education and Environmental Education before diversifying into Special Educational Needs, subsequently developing a particular interest in and focus on behaviour management. She then moved into the higher education sector, initially lecturing in Sport, Physical Education and Teacher Training before taking on her management roles, including responsibilities in academic quality and programme development. Jill completed her Doctoral studies at the University of Leeds in 2006. Her research focused upon conceptions of expertise in the teaching profession.
Jill has a wealth of experience in partnership work across education, the arts, sport, health, housing and diverse communities, both at home and abroad. She has led school, university and community partnerships including Trusts and Academies in England and with schools in Northern Ireland. She has experience in establishing public-private sector partnerships in education having led the Carnegie Leaders in Learning Partnership which together with the private company CCDU successfully tendered for the National College of School Leadership contracts for Headteacher development across the Yorkshire and Humber region.
She has written, developed, taught and delivered a range of specialised programmes and courses (from informal community programmes to accredited Post Graduate level courses) including those associated with Education and Professional Development, Teacher Development, Curriculum Development, School-based Teaching and Learning, Sport for Development, Sport in Society and the Sociology of Sport.
Jill’s partnership work with diverse populations includes inter-faith dialogue and community engagement, specifically with Muslim and Christian communities in Turkey and closer to home, with associated schools in Bradford, West Yorkshire and Tottenham, London. She has led fully funded national level projects to establish a qualifications framework for Ethiopian Higher Education, together with an associated programme of staff development for the sector. She has also led partnerships in Ethiopia with international sporting organisations including Great Ethiopia Run, the Ethiopian Athletics Federation, the football Premiership, the British Council and sporting and educational enterprises in partnership with the world renowned athlete Haile Gebrselassie. Educational initiatives in this context include working in partnership with JeCCDO (Ethiopia’s largest indigenous NGO), Partners for Change Ethiopia and a number of related charities, each now connected to Abbey Grange Academy, engaging students and staff in a number of associated projects.
In 2013, Jill established the distinctive Louder Than Words Festival, a brand-new literary festival and the first of its kind, celebrating words – oral, written and published – associated with the music and popular culture industries. Jill has secured significant public and private sector funding for this venture, including from the Arts Council England and developments now include the delivery of related Festival in a range of locations, including London’s Royal Albert Hall.
Jill is a Trustee of the Archbishop of York’s Youth Trust, where she is recognised as bringing strength and understanding regarding educational development and school-based contexts. Jill is a director of the Causeway Multi-Academy Trust and also a school governor advisor. Until spring 2014 Jill was Chairman of Harrogate International Festivals. She is a member of the Sport for Development (Monitoring & Evaluation) Group and is engaged with activities coordinated via the Commonwealth Secretariat’s Sport for Development division. She has served as an elected governor of Leeds Metropolitan University and as a Trustee of a range of Educational Trusts. Jill also has experience as an external examiner for courses in both education and sport in a number of universities and as a course and curriculum consultant for other universities and schools.
